What we can do for you?

Train your design team members, stakeholders and end users in the ways to avoid the occurrence of  risks and hazards during the design process.

Analyse current design projects to identify potential risks and advise on corrective treatment to produce safe designs.

Train Work Health advisory staff and Accident Investigation personnel in using the Design Error Analysis Matrix tool (DEAM) to carry out a detailed investigation of current projects, or projects that have gone wrong.

Benefits we offer:
•  Increased billable hours through improving workflow process design

•  Improved safety record through business process design

•  Budget savings and reduced time delays through more efficient design processes

•  Decreased operational risk by ensuring new tools and systems match operational needs

•  Better choice of off-the-shelf software products through assessment of workplace needs

•  More accurate specifications for new or updated technologies

•  Increased speed and efficiency of operation through improved user interface design

•  Risk free design outcomes that meet operational needs

•  Improved design contracts, specification writing and user and training manuals by our consultants

•  Faster adoption of new technologies through end-user training courses

•  Better understanding of human factors issues through consultation with us.

My new book

'Design Error - A Human Factors Approach' has been released by CRC Press.

This book shows how to identify potential design errors and modify procedures in the design process to mitigate design-induced error. Real life examples are used to demonstrate the points being made. Many of the concerns raised in the book have come from a worldwide study conducted with designers, managers, and end-users.

Currently I am working on the second book in this series which is centred on understanding the increasing complexity in modern technologies and learning how to mitigate the potential disasters that we will face in the future.

Design errors occur in computer systems.
They also occur in engineering devices, and in business processes as well. It doesn't matter whether you are devising a new technology, tool or work process, you need to error-proof the design process. Similarly, you need to protect systems, devices and processes you are upgrading.

Design errors can be identified and removed before the safety of workers, and the general public, is compromised. SafeDesignSolutions can help you identify where those errors might occur and suggest strategies for error-proofing them. Contact us now by emailing ron@safedesignsolutions.com.

Our people can also help with advice and assessment of the user interface design for safe, efficient and effective operation. We can provide the important link between end-users, managers and designers, and save you money and time on the development or purchase of new technologies.

Call us to assist with up-skilling your end-users. We can advise on instructional design.

Research Basis
Our methods are research-based and are ideally suited to identifying and mitigating design error in IT systems, engineered products and business process designs.

Safe design in these industries is not only possible; it is a vital necessity as systems and work processes become more complex with the advance of automation, the internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Resources
  1. The thesis report from the study involving designers, stakeholders, managers and end users from around the world is available for download. This report offers information on the research background to the study that has lead to the group of services offered by Safe Design Solutions

  2. Advance warning is given of the publication of Ronald Day's book 'Design Error – A Human Factors Approach' by CRC Press which will be available in October, 2016. This book gives detailed information on the causes of design error in IT systems, engineered products and business process design, and provides a set of rules to help avoid design error. The rules will help design teams achieve safe design outcomes.

  3. The design error assessment tool 'Design Error Analysis Matrix (DEAM)' is currently undergoing testing and validation. It will be available late 2016. Further details are offered on this website.
